Ligres is located 51 km south of Rethymno and 7 km south of the village Kerames, at the foot of the imposing mount of Siderotas. It is actually the northbound part of the beachfront called Akoumiani Gialia.
At the west end of the beach there is a beautiful waterfall having water all year round, which falls directly in the sea!
Ligres is a vast beach with coarse sand and fantastic deep sea. The relatively tough access has fortunately kept the development of tourism away, making it one of the nicest, tranquil and most secluded beaches on the island.
Beside the northern part of the beach, which is known as Katsouni, there is a nice beach mainly preferred by nudists, and is completely secluded. However, there are many places where you can swim nude in this vast and empty beach.
You should walk the beachfront to Triopetra, till Xiromilia area, with the amazing rock formations. In the middle of Ligres, a nice reddish big rock stands near the sea.
Ligres Beach is 51 km south of Rethymno and 7 km south of Kerames village, on the Libyan Sea coast of southern Crete. From Rethymno follow the road south towards Kerames, then descend to the coast. The nearest airports are Chania (about 1h40) and Heraklion (about 1h50).
A car is strongly recommended. Ligres is a secluded beach with limited public transport, so a rental car gives you the freedom to reach the village for supplies and to explore nearby beaches such as Triopetra and Preveli.
Triopetra is about 2.5 km along the shore, Xiromilia about 3 km, the Preveli Palm Forest about 22 km, and Rethymno Old Town 51 km. A waterfall runs year-round at the west end of Ligres Beach.
